I’m interviewing my very favorite person in the whole wide world today…….
This girl.
Mama: “So Callie, is it ok if I interview you for the blog? You can share some of your thoughts with all of our friends!”
Callie: “Sure Mama! But this makes me kinda nervous….”
Mama: “That’s what is cool about an interview, Mama can edit out the parts that you don’t want to share or you can think a little longer about the questions if you need time. So the first question is……What do you wish people knew about people that wear prosthetics?”
Callie: “That we can do EVERYTHING that everyone else can. I just might have to do it a little differently but I still can DO it. We are just like everyone else. We have stuff we do well and stuff we need some help with. We have the same feelings that everyone else does.”
Mama: “What was your favorite pattern on your prosthetic leg that we built?”
Callie: “My mermaid one that I have now!”
Mama: “What do you wish you could tell people about your life?”
Callie: “That it hurts my feelings when people just look at my leg and point or stare. I wish they would look at my face instead of always at my leg. I wish they knew they could ask me questions and I would talk to them about it. It hurts my feelings sometimes when kids ask ‘What’s WRONG with your leg? Why do you have a robot leg?’ ”
Mama: “I know baby girl. I like it when they ask you to tell them about your leg. It seems easier if they come from a place of wanting to learn and curiosity.”
Callie: “I like when I can explain it and they just don’t stare at it. Or worse, stare and try to walk away from me real fast.”
Mama: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
Callie: “I want to open an animal shelter rescue center. We can save all the animals and help them find homes. And then I can make a YouTube show to show everyone all the good things we do. And then on the weekend I can be an architect and design homes!
Mama: “Well it sounds like you are going to be busy, you better make sure you save your free time to come hang with your mama and daddy…..”
Callie: “Well you can come help me take care of the baby animals Mama. You can be the one that holds them.”
Mama: “Deal. What’s your favorite animal?”
Callie: “Horses and puppies. I like them both the best. Or wolves. I like wolves too.”
Mama: “What kind of change do you want to make in the world?”
Callie: “I want people to be nicer to each other. And not judge people on how they look. I wish there were more kids like me in movies. There is not a lot of people on TV or in ads that have prosthetic legs. I want to help people know to never give up and you can do anything you set your mind to. I want people to know it’s ok to be different because everyone is different. I also want all the stray animals to have nice homes.”
Mama: “What is one of the hardest things you’ve had to go through?”
Callie: “My heart surgery. This last one I actually remember and it was really hard. It hurt so much. I had to take that yucky disgusting medicine. All I wanted to do was go home and we had to stay in the hospital forever.”
Mama: “But you were so brave. And you walked ONE day after your surgery!”
Callie: “Yeah and they pulled those tubes out of me. That was gross.”
Mama: “Yes, Mama almost threw up too. Let’s talk about something fun. What’s your favorite food?”
Callie: “Fast food.”
Mama: “Lord. Ok, if you had to pick a super power what would it be?”
Callie: “Oohh…to fly! That would be so cool.”
Mama: “Well, I already think you are kinda super hero already.”
Callie: “Oh Mama.”
