Diversity vs Inclusion

November 19, 2019 in Warrior Princess - No Comments

I had to politely explain the difference between diversity and inclusion to someone the other day who ignorantly told me…
“All dance studios are inclusive.”

Um no.
We had one studio that flat out told us Callie was not welcome.  They only accepted little girls that could do the moves correctly and could be “real dancers.”  They were one of the best studios in the area.

Because this mama very rarely accepts no for an answer, we waited a bit and then tried a different one. This one said they would take Callie and we were thrilled.

But they weren’t inclusive. They were happy to let her be in class and take our monthly dues but they didn’t adapt things for her. They expected her to be able to do the same movements that the other little girls did–with her prosthetic leg.  They didn’t make any modifications to the activities.  Nor would they allow her to be part of the performance because she couldn’t do the moves with her prosthetic like the other girls and they claimed it would be disruptive to the program.

So we left that studio after two lessons.

Until we were introduced to our current one. Which we LOVE.
Callie not only was welcomed with open arms but they have adapted and modified things for her so she can fully participate to her utmost abilities.  She is celebrated for her unique talents and gifts.  She is treated like a member of the team and never sidelined or asked to sit anything out.

She is just blooming on stage and is so incredibly excited about her upcoming production of The Nutcracker.

Diversity is being invited to the party. Inclusion is being asked to DANCE.

Hi Y'all! I’m Jaime, a proud working mama, author, girl boss and wifey to an ultra-adorable husband. I am a huge book nerd, I drink coffee like my life depends on it, and run on dry shampoo and Amazon Prime. Leopard print is my favorite color. I am a story teller at heart and this blog is a virtual scrapbook of our crazy beautiful life. I'm a Type One Diabetic and our little warrior princess Callie is a lower limb amputee. By sharing how we’ve chosen to flourish in the garden we’ve been planted in, we hope you can take some small nuggets of hope, inspiration, and laughter. We are so grateful that you’ve found us—welcome to the fam. We embrace our perfectly imperfect lives and don’t let the doctor’s appointments, spreadsheets, speaking engagements, 10th birthday parties to plan, housework or date nights overwhelm us. Those things are just the beautiful reminders of all the blessings in our lives. Read More
