Ever been told to follow your intuition or go with your gut? And have you ever been confused about what that means? You’re a rational person. Why would you listen to your semi-questionable tummy over very real facts? Feelings over…..logic?
Intuition gets called a lot of things. Your internal compass, the meeting place between the conscious and the unconscious parts of the brain, your inner knowing, your heart speaking among other things.
Regardless of what we call it, your intuition tells you the direction to go even if you can’t immediately explain why.
When to Follow Your Intuition
When you practice listening to your intuition, you receive a huge gift: peace of mind. Because when you trust your intuition, you feel more centered, more grounded, and more connected to yourself. Life becomes easier. Way easier because you trust that part of you that knows—and that part of you is called your intuition. You aren’t spending massive amounts of time waffling back and forth, debating one option over another. You are confident in who you are and in the decisions you make.
My intuition is one of my biggest allies. It is what I lean on whenever I have a decision to make. Sure, I run the numbers, do my research, and have the conversations I need to, but really, in the end, I know all that knowledge does not outweigh what I know in my heart of hearts.
And I’ve learned, when the Universe is trying to tell me something, it’s good to listen.
Let’s look at some other times to follow to your intuition:
1. A Gut Feeling is Telling You a Boundary Was Crossed
When one of your boundaries is crossed, it’s really common to feel this deep in your gut. It’s almost a visceral reaction. Your intuition is telling you that something isn’t right. Your intuition is yelling “protect yourself!”
Please don’t ignore those feelings! Boundaries are so incredibly important to your well-being and your relationships.
When one of your boundaries is crossed, there’s a good chance your body will let you know. It could be a queasy or sinking feeling in your stomach. Your pulse could start racing. Your might start to sweat. You might get goosebumps or you might get the shivers. It’s different for everybody, but any of these bodily reactions is your intuition communicating with you.
Your intuition is telling you something is wrong, and that’s something worth listening to. When these things happen, it’s time to take control of the experience and make sure your boundaries are known.
2. You Feel “Off” After a Conversation or Interaction With Someone
Have you ever walked away from a conversation and just felt the vibe was off? Like it just didn’t feel right. But what was it?
It could be right after you met a friend for coffee, after getting off the phone with a close family member, or going over a proposal with your boss. Whatever the situation is, if you feel your intuition kicking in after a conversation with someone, it’s time to take a beat and listen.
Maybe these are signs you’re ignoring your intuition. Maybe your intuition is telling you that your relationship with your friend is suffering. Maybe your gut is telling you something isn’t right with your family member, or the proposal isn’t quite as bullet proof as you thought it was.
I had an experience many years ago where a friend wanted to start a business together. Was it a great idea? Yes. Did I think I would enjoy partnering with the friend? Also, yes. But there was just something that felt off about it. I didn’t feel like it was a good choice for no reason other than……it didn’t FEEL right. And so I didn’t do it.
These are all very different examples, and I’m sure you have a ton of your own. Take a minute to check in with yourself after leaving a conversation or interaction with someone. Does something feel off? If it does, take a closer look at why you may be feeling this way (Might be a great time to journal it out!).
Your rational mind may encourage you to dismiss these feelings as only “feelings” because they’re not rooted in fact, but it could be that the facts just haven’t revealed themselves yet, and your unconscious mind has caught something that your conscious mind may have missed.
Did my intuition save me from a disastrous business partnership? I’ll never know.

3. A Healthy Activity Sparks Complete Joy
Listening to your intuition isn’t always about negative feelings. Sometimes it’s about the positive ones too! When you feel complete wonder, joy, and elation from a healthy activity, listen to yourself. That surge of joy is your body and mind telling you that you need more of this.
We’re talking those truly healthy moments when you can find joy through self-care, such as taking a walk in nature, practicing your favorite hobby, blowing bubbles outside with your kids, or dancing around the room to 80s rock.
Sometimes your intuition guides you to something wonderful. Notice a new coffee shop on your morning walk? Go for it and stop in! See a field full of horses on your drive home from work and you can’t help but pull over? Listen to those feelings and allow yourself to have teeny bit of fun again.
4. Someone Asks You to Do Something You’re Uncomfortable With
Has someone ever asked you to do something that makes you uncomfortable? If your gut feeling and intuition are telling you it’s not right—that means something.
That uncomfortable feeling is your body’s way of communicating with you. Never put yourself in a situation where you are compromising your own safety, needs, boundaries, or values because someone has asked. Even if it’s someone close to you–it might be time for a re-evaluation of the relationship.
Raise your hand if:
You’ve ever had a partner tried to convince you to do something sexually that you were uncomfortable with?
You’ve ever had a family member pressure you to do something that didn’t align with your own values?
You’ve ever had a friend or coworker tried to convince you to break the law, lie, or hurt someone you care about?
You’ve ever had a doctor make a recommendation that didn’t feel right for your child?
That uncomfortable feeling deep in your gut that appears when someone asks you to do something that goes against who you are……that’s your intuition. She’s telling you, or in some cases, yelling at you that this particular thing is not right for you. There have been countless times in my life that I WISHED I’d listened to my intuition because it would have saved me so much time, energy, and heartache.

5. Your Thoughts Are Pulled Toward the Same Dreams
What dreams are on repeat for you? The ones that are on your heart, you can’t get rid of them, and you think about them all the time?
Have you ALWAYS wanted to write a book? Run a marathon? Own a farm? Have you always dreamed of starting your own business? Do you continually fantasize about moving to a different city? Taking up salsa dancing?
What is your inner voice saying?
If you keep coming back to the same dreams over and over again, there’s a good chance your intuition is trying to tell you something. Deep down, your inner self KNOWS this is the direction you need to go and chances are, you’d be a whole lot happier if you actually listened.
When your subconscious mind communicates the direction to take your life, listen! Or at least…..explore them. Always wanted to move to another city? Book a weekend get away there and pretend you’re a local. Want to run a marathon? Sign up for a 5k so you can get the vibe of race day.
I think when we ignore these callings that are clearly on our heart, we are ignoring our own needs. It’s going to lead to resentment, burnout, longing, and an ever-present feeling of regret. I don’t know about you, but I want to live life to the fullest and go to the grave with zero regrets.
So to sum it up friends, when you intuition comes knocking……
Open the door.
Love and light,
Jaime
