How to Read Energy and Trust the Vibes You Feel

Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt tension, even before anyone said a word? Or met someone who gave you an unexplainable sense of peace — or yuckiness?

That’s not your imagination. That’s energy.
And reading it? That’s a gift you were born with — one that gets stronger the more you trust it.

In a world that often tells us to “be logical” or “not overthink it,” learning to read energy — and honor what we feel — is a radical return to self-trust.

What Does It Mean to Read Energy?

Reading energy is tuning into the vibe of people, places, and situations. It’s noticing what your body and spirit pick up — even before your brain processes it.
It’s intuitive.
It’s ancient.
And it’s something we all do — even if we’re not always aware of it.

Some signs you’re already reading energy:

  • You feel drained after being around certain people.

  • You light up around others — even with little conversation.

  • You sense when something’s “off” even when no one says it.

For literally my entire life, I have been so in tune with energy.  Often times, I can sense that someone is upset or mad (before they even can admit it to themselves that they are sometimes) and can pick up very easily on people’s energies.  It’s not a muscle I have to train–it’s just something that comes very naturally to me.  Maybe it’s because I have always been very in tune with my body and notice when something feels “off” or “strained”?

Regardless, if  you want to discover simple ways to tune into the vibes around you and use your inner wisdom to make empowered decisions read on:

How to Start Reading Energy (More Intentionally)

1. Slow Down and Pay Attention

Energy is subtle — it doesn’t shout.
Take moments throughout your day to pause and feel. Ask yourself:

  • What’s the mood of this room?

  • How does my body feel around this person?

  • What does my gut say about this situation?

That pause is where your wisdom lives and is needed to give you the time to process the feelings.

2. Use Your Body as a Barometer

Your body is always picking up energy — even when your mind isn’t.

  • A tight chest may signal discomfort.

  • Goosebumps could mean resonance or excitement.

  • A sinking stomach might mean “nope.”

Your body doesn’t lie. Learn to listen.

3. Clean Your Own Energy Field

You can’t clearly read others’ energy if you’re overwhelmed by your own.
Protect and clear your energy daily by:

  • Spending time alone

  • Getting outside (nature is a natural reset)

  • Taking salt baths or using sage/palo santo

  • Practicing breathwork or meditation

A clear field = a stronger intuitive signal.

4. Trust the First Feeling

Your intuition is instant. Doubt is delayed.
When you get a quick sense of something — that’s often the truest part.
Don’t talk yourself out of your knowing. Your vibe check is valid.

If you are an animal lover like me, you might have noticed that humans are the only animals that don’t run at the first sight of danger.  My dog, the zebra on the savannah, and the little bunny that lives under the tool shed at the ranch–each and every one of them turn tail and run if they sense danger.  The little hairs stand up on the back of their neck or they sense something like a predator in their presence?

They are OUT.  No questions asked.

Humans are the only animals that squashes down their intuition when it’s screaming “DANGER” at them.  We try and rationalize our decisions or second guess our first reactions.  That boss that you knew was bad news but still took the job because you thought it would help your resume?  That girl who your brother brought to family brunch that you got a weird vibe from but told yourself you were being overly sensitive?  That friend that felt a little needy and you told yourself you were being unempathetic–and then she turned into a total nightmare?

What would have happened if you had listened to that first gut reaction?

5. Notice Patterns

If certain people or places always leave you feeling heavy, anxious, or uplifted — that’s a clue.

Feel like you ran an emotional marathon after talking to your grandpa?

Feel like you just had the biggest hype session after brunch with your girlfriends?

Feel like you dread any interaction with your mom?

Keep an “energy journal” where you track how you feel before and after interactions. Patterns reveal what aligns with your well-being.

Why Trusting Energy Matters

We’ve been taught to value logic over feeling. But logic doesn’t always keep you safe.
Energy does.
It protects you.
It guides you.
It helps you navigate life with more ease, clarity, and confidence.

The more you trust the vibes you feel, the more you’ll:

  • Avoid draining relationships

  • Attract aligned people and opportunities

  • Feel safe in your own decisions

Final Thoughts: You’re Not “Too Sensitive” — You’re Tuned In

If you feel everything deeply, if you pick up on moods, if you sense people’s true intentions — that’s not a weakness.
That’s your superpower.

Your ability to read energy is part of your feminine wisdom.
It’s real. It’s sacred. And it’s something the world desperately needs.

So next time you get a vibe — honor it.
Because your energy radar?
It’s the most honest voice in the room.

Sending you love and light,

Jaime

A softer life starts here….

A softer life starts here….

Hi Y'all

Hi, I’m Jaime — writer, mother, storyteller, and the heart behind the blog. For nearly a decade, I wrote online as The Princess and the Prosthetic, sharing my daughter’s journey with disability and the lessons our family learned along the way. It was a beautiful season — full of advocacy, connection, and community — but as my daughter grew older, I felt a shift. She deserved more autonomy. More privacy. More room to decide how she shows up in the world. And I realized something else: My own story was expanding too. Motherhood was still here. Disability was still here. But so were grief, healing, womanhood, nervous system care, feminine energy, homemaking, identity, softness… the fuller, deeper pieces of life that were ready to be spoken aloud. Whether you come for the cozy routines, the motherhood reflections, the disability advocacy, or the soft life inspiration — thank you for choosing to share this space with me. Pour a warm drink. Settle in. Let’s grow a life that feels like you again.

Jaime
